Marketing Memos: Matt Patterson

One of the most common concerns I hear from authors is that of marketing, so I decided to seek out the experts to offer their best marketing tips. Each week, I'll interview a marketing expert in this new Marketing Memos column.

Today, I'd like to welcome author, entrepreneur, and friend Matt Patterson to share his insights on the marketing journey.

Welcome, Matt! First, tell us about what you market.

I market my two books – My Emily and We’ve Got This! 

In addition, I also market my speaking platform as well as training – organizational and/or individual.

For years, I would be asked the question, “So, what do you do for a living?” I always responded, “I’m an author and a speaker.” That’s true, but in the last year or so my vision has changed.

Yes, I have written two books and yes, I speak to groups, companies, organizations, and individuals – but my passion (writing and speaking) has also become my purpose. 

Now, rather than saying I’m an author and a speaker, I consider myself an advocate for childhood cancer, special needs children, and for couples who have lost children.

Share with us up to three of your top marketing tips. What will help our readers become better marketers for their own businesses or books?

  1. Be persistent and consistent – relentless. Whether it’s with blogging, a YouTube channel, social media or anything else, be absolutely persistent, consistent and RELENTLESS. Each and every day. Stick to your plan.
  2. Don’t be afraid to try new things. There may be some form of marketing that you want to try, but you’re hesitant. Whether it’s starting a YouTube channel, jumping on to Pinterest or Instagram – step forward, try it, and learn it. Slow and steady. Find out who the REAL innovators are in the areas you wish to try. Not the self-proclaimed gurus – but the REAL leaders. Little by little. However, be persistent and consistent. RELENTLESS.
  3. Don’t listen to the naysayers. Remove them. Remove negativity – whenever, however. It’s venom. We often hear – “Surround yourself with positive, supportive people.” Simple, but true. This past year I had to distance/separate myself from a “friend.” This “friend” was harsh, negative, and narcissistic. I just put up with it. He was my friend, but he wasn’t a friend. He was someone with whom I couldn’t the cord. It was difficult, but I finally reached a point where I had to cut the cord. I’m happier. I’m healthier (physically, mentally and emotionally). Don’t be afraid to cut the cord AND don’t be so hard on yourself. You’re a good person. Really. You are! Take a second right now, go over to a mirror and tell yourself, “You’re a good person!” One more time! “You’re a good person!” 
What’s the ONE thing you wish someone had told you before you got started in this business that would have helped you most in the early stages?

Be careful of where you invest your time and resources. There is a difference between and spending and investing.

Many times, when individuals start in a new venture, they’re so excited to get started that they want everything – right then, right now.

Spending is when you quickly spend resources for coaching, programs, etc., from self-proclaimed experts with little or no return.

Investing resources is when you invest your precious resources with someone who is a legitimate leader in the arena you’re pursuing. The training and insight received will provide a real and true return on your investment. 

Be careful. Do your homework.

What’s the hardest challenge you’ve faced in this marketing journey?

As simple as it may sound, my hardest challenge is staying organized.

Things happen. 

Life happens.

From posting content to writing, editing, consulting others, there’s one thing I’ve battled and that’s putting ME first. 

I got my wake-up call in late October when I had a stroke. I dodged a massive bullet and I give thanks each and every day for the blessings in my life. Please take care of YOU first.
Plan your each work day the night before. Your plan should include some moments for YOU. If it means waking up 45 minutes earlier to read, meditate, or work out – or perhaps all three, then set your alarm. If it means going to bed earlier to wake up earlier – so be it. 

And one piece of advice – coming from someone who is guilty of this – learn how to let go of some things that you just don’t need to do. Let it go. LET IT GO! You don’t have to do EVERYTHING!

What’s next for you? 

Busy. Busy. Busy.

I’m in the final stages of completing a companion workbook for We’ve Got This! Shortly thereafter, I’ll begin work on a multiple-book inspirational series, which has me very excited. I’m also exploring philanthropic efforts geared toward childhood cancer and Down syndrome.
